We love books. They are hard for me to get rid of...so we have lots of books! But I am a little picky and can be a little disappointed at some of the selections at the library. I want a book that is wholesome, something that doesn't promote bad attitudes (
surprisingly, lots of kids books do just that), a book that is fun to read, and a book that is well-written with colorful words or rhymes (so I don't get sick of reading it over and over and over)! I don't agree with the idea that "Just so my kids are reading...I don't really care what it is." On the contrary, the written word is extremely powerful in creating our own ideas of right and wrong, strong character versus weak character, etc. I also believe that reading is incredibly beneficial for building a strong foundation in education. One book that really impressed this idea upon me is "The Read-Aloud Treasury" by Jim
Trelease. I don't entirely agree with all of his book choices (he's not coming at it from a scriptural viewpoint) but his points about reading versus
TV viewing and the benefit of reading aloud even to older children are very convincing.
This was a really fun find last week. Levi and DJ both enjoy it. The word choices and rhyming are so captivating.

I've been reading books by Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti recently. Books such as the Black, Red, and White Circle, and the Lost Books Series, along with "The Oath". All of them have some sort of spiritual message to them, even though you usually don't know what it is while reading it, and then it all comes together at the end and you're like "...wow." Especially Frank Peretti's books. I think they're both great authors...
I have really enjoyed homeschooling through Sonlight, since we get so many good books to read together.
Have you read any of Jan Brett books? We really enjoy the pictures in her books and the story line is nice too.
Books. Aren't they wonderful! Some of my favorite kid author's that I and the kids mutually like are...Frances stories by Russell Hoban, Babar stories by Laurent De Brunhoff, Mr Bumba by Pearl Augusta HArwood, Amelia Bedilia by Peggy Welch and Keiko Kasza's books. When Beatrice was really small she fell in love with Grandpa Toads Secrets by Keiko and totally wore out the libraries copy (almost anyways) so I got her, her own from Amazon and that is in pretty shaby shape too.~Anna
I forgot my very favorite- Patricia Palochow(sp) books. I can't think of any titles but they are great stories older than Levi's range though. She does her own art work, too.~ Anna
Thanks! It really helps to have some good ideas when doing library trips...rather than just winging it!! I had forgotten about some of those and a few I'm not familiar with.
